Gunung Kawi Temple is located on the Pakerisan River in Penaka, Tampaksiring Village, Tampaksiring District, Gianyar Regency, Bali. Approximately 1 hour's drive from Denpasar city.

You will pass 315 steps made of solid stone to get to Gunung Kawi Temple. You will also find several shops along the path. They sell food, drinks, and souvenirs. Before you enter the temple, they will let you wear a sarong, which is available at the ticket counter for free.

 

The Gunung Kawi Temple site is divided into two groups and has a bathing pool and shower. In the eastern part of the river, there are five temples. Sculpted on the rock wall, it forms a temple carving with an arch frame. The function of the arch frame is to prevent erosion that can damage the temple sculptures.

 

 

 

In the western part of the river, there are four temples. Looking natural, Gunung Kawi Temple is filled with moss and green grass. There is a hermitage room as a place of meditation.

 

This place has become an archaeological site protected by the government. In addition, it is used by local residents as a place of worship for Hinduism or temples. The origin of the name Gunung Kawi Temple is GUNUNG, which means mountain, and KAWI, which means sculpture. And according to the circumstances of the temple, it was made of rock cliffs in the mountains by being carved.

 

 

 

The Gunung Kawi temple site was discovered by Dutch researchers in 1920. Research was carried out on this temple site. From the writings in the carvings of Gunung Kawi Temple. Finally, it is known that the temple was built during the reign of the Kingdom of Bali. During the reign of King Udayana until the reign of his son, named Anak Wungsu, in the 11th century.
