Pura Besakih is building for the sanctity of human beings and Hinduism in particular, Besakih meaningful philosophical on early entry of Hindu religion in Bali. Every year during the full moon big ceremony is held with great celebration for 1 month at this temple.
The development of Besakih on the slopes of Mount Agung is a place of worship and ritual for god, because based on confidence in Bali and Hindus in particular as at the summit of Mount Agung are Palace of the Gods.
Besakih complex consists of 1 Main Temple (Penataran Besakih) and 18 Pura Companion Temple (1 Pura Basukian and 17 Others). In Pura Basukian, in this area the first time it receives a revelation of God by Hyang Rishi Markendya, the forerunner of Hindu Dharma Religion is now in Bali, as its center.
Besakih Temple is the center of the ceremony in Bali. While the largest temple in the complex area called Penataran, there are three statues in Penataran symbol of God's nature Tri Murti namely: Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva, which is the symbol of the Creator God, Preserver God and Fuser / Reincarnation God.
As a general overview of the story, Besakih Temple is built by concept of the cosmos balance, both horizontally and vertically between the bottom and the nature. On the walls of each temple there are many sculptures carved which has story, and the meaning of its own story about the forerunner of Hinduism and existence of the temples.
This temple construction begins with the planting of Panca Datu (five metals), likes : silver, copper, iron, gold and ruby in about the 8th century which is first in Pura Basukihan by Rishi Markandya. Then Basukihan Temple growing to be Besakih Temple after all Kings and people pray in here. And in about the 10th century and into the 11th, King Kesari Warmadewa come to visit the temple and founded the Temple Merajan Slonding.
According to inscription of Batu Madeg, Mpu Beradah during the reign of Erlangga King also came to Besakih Temple. Besides that, King Kresna Kepakisan and Kings of Gelgel also pay attention to worship at Besakih. At that time for the maintenance and development as well as implementation of the ceremony at Besakih temple is under the management of Klungkung kingdom which is the highest authority.
This temple is located in the village of Besakih, District Rendang, Karangasem regency.
Location of Besakih on the slopes of Mount Agung Southwestern at an altitude of about 1000 meters above sea level, and is approximately less than 60 km to the northeast of the city of Denpasar Bali.
