Ulun Danu is one of the famous tourist destinations in Bali, which you can visit when traveling to Bedugul or Singaraja.
The location is on the western part of Lake Beratan, and the journey to Singaraja is from the direction of Bedugul. Ulun Danu literally means "the edge of the lake." But it is not possible to claim that the site is on the edge of the lake. Understanding in general tends to show that everything that exists around the lake will have an orientation to the location of this temple, and cleanliness throughout the surrounding area must be maintained to preserve the existence of this temple.
The Ulun Danu Temple complex consists of four units, each dedicated to Lingga Petak, and is the temporary residence of the gods. This temple symbolizes the natural environment because this location is surrounded by mountain peaks such as Mount Mangu, Lotus Bang, and Mount Pohan. Nowadays, the temple appears to have been renovated, and there are no historical facts that can be used to trace the history of the birth of this temple.
The only source to reveal the history of the temple is a relic of the Kingdom of Mengwi; the text has been translated from Bali to the Latin alphabet letters that are in the Museum of Bali in Denpasar. It is written that I Gusti Agung Putu was defeated during the battle and became a prisoner of war by the Kingdom of Tabanan. The people of Marga begged the King to bring I Gusti Agung Putu to the Marga region, and from here he set up a strategy to regain lost land. He went to the summit of Mount Mangu to meditate and get inspired. Returning from meditation, he went home to Marga and built homes in Balahayu (now Blayu village).
During the civil war between the kingdoms of Tabanan and Penebel, I Gusti Agung Putu finally managed to help the kingdom of Tabanan win the battle. So with this victory, King Tabanan gives I Gusti Agung Putu an area in Marga. The young soldier continues to show his success; he was building a temple dedicated to the god who was at the peak of Mount Mangu. It added that the construction of Taman Ayun Temple began after Ulun Danu's construction was completed. While the date of construction of Taman Ayun is recorded with the sound "Sad Bhuta Yaksa Deva" (Caka 1556 or 1634 AD). We can use this as an estimate of the period of the construction phase and the presence of Ulun Danu.
